In case anyone is interested, the NPS is soliciting comments for the new Grand Canyon Backcountry Management Plan. This can include comments regarding Arizona Trail use and mountain biking on the North Rim.

Please take a moment to tell the NPS what you think!

As an aside, the Arizona Trail Association has already summited a letter supportive of mountain biking (and mountain bike tourism) on the North Rim, and ensuring that any plan acknowledges that folks "through-ride" the trail even through their wheels can't touch soil in the canyon.

My comment, on a desperately needed update:

Need to upgrade Backcountry Permit system to an online application and payment process, with maximum 3-day response time via email or phone. Need to have an online calendar showing available days and numbers of available spots so applicants can avoid blindly applying for unavailable time periods, with resulting wait for response further limiting follow-up availability.

This would also reduce work-load on Park staff, reducing the number of surplus applications and required responses for days already filled.

PLEASE add your votes to this. Last year I sent in 15 applications to try to set up a though-hike with friends and family, all without success. If anyone else has had this problem, get in on this!
